Beginning last summer, WorkplaceDynamics of Exton, PA, partnered Columbus CEO and WBNS-10TV  to seek nominations for exemplary workplaces among central Ohio employers with at least 50 employees. A combination of ads, social media and direct outreach identified more than 850 employers from a variety of sectors that were invited to participate to make the list of Ohio’s 50 Top Workplaces.

For the 2014 Top Workplaces, 79 for-profit, nonprofit and government employers with a combined total of 31,247 employees completed the examination by WorkplaceDynamics to be considered for the Top Workplaces designation. That required 12,609 employees in those workplaces to complete surveys covering a range of topics that have been thoroughly tested to reveal whether an employer provides and maintains a top workplace. Nominated employers distribute surveys randomly to employees, with a response rate of at least 35 percent required.

This year’s winners include 31 newcomers and 19 from the 2013 list.

For the surveys, either online or on paper, employees use a seven-point scale to respond to 22 statements such as “I feel genuinely appreciated at this company” and “I have confidence in the leader of this company.” The surveys measure qualities such as company leadership, communications, career opportunities, working environment, managerial relationships, pay and benefits. Responses are then correlated to a control question in which employees rate their workplace. A series of statistical tests look for any questionable results.

Feeling good about a company’s future and having confidence in its leadership play a key role in creating a Top Workplace, according to central Ohio workers who participated in Columbus CEO’s survey in partnership with WorkplaceDynamics.

Sixty-eight percent of the workers at the highest-rated businesses said they believed their companies were going in the right direction. Sixty-five percent said they had confidence in the leader of the company.

Some direct quotes from the surveys..

“They always keep us informed. “We always know what’s going on.”

“The company also shows its appreciation by hosting events to celebrate milestones and providing perks like free lunches.”

“You have a sense of belonging and camaraderie and unity in all of these teams you are a part of.”

Construction is scheduled to start this week on the newly-redesigned Aston Row townhomes, which now feature a more contemporary look. The for-sale product will complement a 59-unit apartment building currently under construction at the corner of Third and Dennison Avenues in Victorian Village.

The ten townhome units, which will be about 1,800 square feet, all feature two-car garages and rooftop terraces. Jason Snyder of Snyder Barker Investments said he expects the units to be delivered by May of next year, with prices starting at $425,000. A second row of townhomes that would face Starr Avenue is still in the planning stages.

“We have a conceptual design for the Starr Avenue phase but won’t finalize the design and start construction until we sell at least a few units of the Aston Row phase,” said Snyder, adding that they started with the units facing the alley “because it creates a bookend development for our apartment building with it’s location, scale and design. It will dramatically change the experience along the alley which will be a real positive for the residents of both developments and the neighborhood.”

Snyder expects demand to be strong for the townhomes.

“At the moment, there are virtually no new construction ‘for sale’ options for people in Victorian Village. We believe people will find the combination of features that Aston Row provides very attractive.”

As for the Aston Place Apartments, windows are currently being installed and plumbing and electric work is ongoing. The hope is to have the first units available in early February and the building completely finished in early March. Pre-leasing will start in the near future.
